Wherever you live, you can help us bring Clean Air for Kids in Schools
Please write a letter asking that schools add an air filter to each classroom and regularly open windows to reduce the number of coughs, colds, and Covid-19 infections that kids and their teachers catch at school. It would also increase attendance rates. At the same time, it will help schools to save money on supply teacher costs and improve academic performance. There is absolutely no downside to them taking this decision.
We have written template letters that can be downloaded.
Ultimately, the people who will take the decision about whether to provide clean air for kids in schools will be the councillors at the Local Education Authority (LEA) that run our local schools. They have the power to make it happen.
So we are asking the leader of that Local Education Authority, the chair of the Children’s Policy Committee and individual councillors to agree to protect the health of school kids and staff.
We are asking local Members of Parliament to support this initiative which will improve attendance, pupil performance and save money for schools’ budgets.
There are template letters for all of these below and you can also find contact details for the people to write to. We have also provided template letters for you to use to write to your schools.
We have local groups in the areas listed below. To get specific information about contacting local politicians in these areas and to download letters, click on the name.
If you live anywhere else in the country, the information you need is below.
Write to the Leader of your Local Education Authority
To find out which is your Local Education Authority (LEA) use the ‘Find your LEA’ button.
You can click onto the appropriate LEA link, which will take you to that Council’s website, from where you need to look for the pages about ‘Your Council’ or ‘Executive Members’. It is possible to search for the leader of the Council and find their postal address and email address.
Then download a template letter to send to them.
Write to your local Councillors on your Local Education Authority
If you support children being able to breathe clean air when they are at school, please will you write to your elected ward councilors at your Local Education Authority to ask them to support this initiative.
You can find out who they are here:
You just need to enter your postcode, and you will be able to email them directly. Please write to all of them.
If you would like to write your own letter or email, you can make use of any information on this website. Or you are welcome to use our template letter, perhaps personalising it to your own circumstances and position, and maybe also including that you have a child or children in local schools if you do. We would be grateful if you write to your councillors whether or not you have school-age children.
If you support local kids being able to breathe clean air when they are at school, please will you write to your Member of Parliament to ask them to support this initiative.
Write to your Member of Parliament
You can find out who your Member of Parliament is here:
If you want to send a letter rather than an email, their postal address is: House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA
If you would like to write your own letter or email, please make use of any information on this website. Or you are welcome to use our template letter, perhaps personalising it to your own circumstances and position, and maybe also including that you have a child or children in local schools if you do. We would be grateful if you write to your Member of Parliament whether or not you have school-age children. Add your name and email below to receive the template.
Write to your child’s school
If you are a parent of a child or children at school, please will you write to the Head Teacher, any of the teachers, especially those you know, and/or to the School Governors to ask them to take steps so that their pupils breathe clean air when they are in school.

If you are a Head Teacher, teacher or school governor and you want to have clean air in your school, please will you write to the leader of your Local Education Committee or the chair of the Committee that covers schools and education to tell them and to ask for help.
For Schools
If you are able to take action at your school level, please do so.
Simply adding an air filter to each classroom and regularly opening windows will reduce the number of coughs, colds, and Covid-19 infections that kids and their teachers catch at school and take home to their families and others. It would also increase attendance rates and help you meet your targets.
At the same time, it will help schools to save money on supply teacher costs and improve academic performance. Sky News recently reported that supply teacher costs in England last year were £1.4 billion. That’s money that could be much better spent, quite apart from the improvements in pupil performance with fewer teaching hours delivered by supply teachers. It has been estimated that installing air cleaners in all schools in England would cost £140 million. When compared to the annual budget for supply teachers, this one-off installation cost is just 10% of one year’s expenditure.
Running costs for air cleaners are low: it’s effectively the power for a small fan in each unit, and a change of filter in each one every 12-24 months, so the cost of installation and running costs would pay for itself many times over very quickly just from the savings from supply teacher budgets.
We have calculated that over the c20-year lifetime of an air cleaner running all day in schools during term times, including installation and running costs, it would be around £8 per child per year to provide pupils and staff with clean air.
There is absolutely no downside to them taking this decision.
If you would like to write your own letter or email, you can make use of any information on this website. Or you are welcome to use our template letter, perhaps personalising it to your own circumstances and position. Add your name and email below to receive the template.
